Read John 7:37

(37) On the last and greatest day of the festival, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink.” John 7:37

Seven hundred years after Jeremiah preached this message, Jesus stood up and made an incredible invitation:

“Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink.”

That's the answer to Jeremiah 2.

Not a better cistern.
Not more effort.
Not trying harder.

Jesus.

Because the answer to a thirsty soul has always been Jesus.

The satisfaction you've been chasing isn't found in a thing.

It's found in a person.

And His name is Jesus.

Have I truly come to Jesus for life, or am I still looking somewhere else?

Today's Challenge:
Spend a few minutes today thanking Jesus for being the source of life, hope, forgiveness, and satisfaction.

Today's Prayer:
“Jesus, thank You for inviting thirsty people like me to come and drink. Help me stop chasing things that leak and find my satisfaction in You.”

Read Jeremiah 2:13

(13) “My people have committed two sins: They have forsaken me, the spring of living water, and have dug their own cisterns, broken cisterns that cannot hold water.” Jeremiah 2:13

God gives Israel a picture they would never forget.

They abandoned a spring of living water.

And chose broken cisterns instead.

Now, if you didn’t know, there’s a difference between a fresh spring and a broken cistern.

A spring constantly produces fresh water.

A broken cistern slowly loses whatever it holds.

That's the difference between God and everything else we chase.

Money leaks.
Success leaks.
Popularity leaks.

Relationships, careers, possessions, and accomplishments were never designed to carry the weight of your soul.

They make terrible saviors.

Because all of them eventually leak.

What “broken cistern” have I been expecting to satisfy me?

Today's Challenge:
Identify one thing you've been relying on too heavily and surrender it to God.

Today's Prayer:
“Lord, forgive me for expecting temporary things to do what only You can do.”

Read Jeremiah 2:8

(8) The priests did not ask, “Where is the Lord?” Those who deal with the law did not know me... Jeremiah 2:8

One of the saddest lines in this passage is:

“They did not ask, ‘Where is the Lord?’”

This didn’t happen in a day.

This happened over time.

After all, nobody just decides in a moment to abandon God.

Drift happens slowly.

One compromise at a time.
One distraction at a time.
One neglected prayer at a time.

Until eventually you realize you've gone days, or even weeks, without really depending on Him.

The people in Jeremiah’s day didn't stop seeking the Lord suddenly.

It was a slow fade.

And that's how it always happens.

Have you been seeking God lately, or just assuming He's there?

Before you do anything else tomorrow morning, spend a few minutes intentionally seeking the Lord.

“Jesus, don't let me drift from You. Keep my heart close and dependent upon You.”

Read Jeremiah 2:6–7

(6) They did not ask, “Where is the Lord, who brought us up out of Egypt and led us through the barren wilderness...” Jeremiah 2:6

God reminds Israel of their story.

“I brought you out of Egypt.”
“I led you through the wilderness.”
“I brought you into a fertile land.”

In other words:

“I rescued you.”
“I provided for you.”
“I was faithful to you.”

And yet somehow, they forgot.

Not intellectually.

Relationally.

They stopped living like God had been faithful.

And if we're not careful, we can do the same thing.

We can become so focused on what God hasn't done yet that we forget everything He already has.

Where have I forgotten God's faithfulness in my life?

Make a list of three specific ways God has been faithful to you in the past.

Today's Prayer:
“Father, thank You for Your faithfulness. Help me remember what You've done and trust You with what's ahead.”

One of the most important truths in this passage is that God never criticizes His people for being thirsty.

The problem wasn't their thirst.

The problem was where they went to satisfy it.

And honestly, the same is true for us.

We're all thirsty for something.

Thirsty for purpose.
Thirsty for meaning.
Thirsty for love.
Thirsty for significance.

God created us that way.

The question isn't whether you're thirsty.

The question is where you're drinking.

Because if you look to anything besides God to satisfy your deepest needs, you'll eventually discover it can't.

Pay attention today to what you run to when you're stressed, discouraged, or bored.

“Lord, help me recognize where I've been looking for life apart from You.”
